About Dictionaryish
A dictionary tells you what a word means. This is a record of what things mean to people, which turns out to be a different and stranger job.
Look up procrastination and you will not find one sentence settling it. You will find a philosopher, a poet and a comedian disagreeing in the same column, and a piece of trivia that quietly reframes the argument. Look up homesickness, or silence, or schadenfreude, and the same thing happens.
That is the only test a page has to pass here: not whether the word exists, but whether there is anything worth saying about it. A great many perfectly good words fail that test, and they are not in here.
So it is built for browsing rather than lookup. You arrive somewhere specific and leave by a door you did not know was there.
How it works
Concepts and lenses
Every topic has a page, and each page can be read through more than one lens — definitions, perspectives, trivia, memes, one-liners, dad jokes, and more. The row of marks beneath a headword shows which lenses that topic is stocked with; the rest of the site works the same way, one subject seen several ways.
The map
Any topic can be opened as a map: the concept at the centre, and the things it is a kind of, contains, or stands near radiating out from it. Clicking a node moves you to it, so the map is a way of travelling rather than a picture to look at.
Lists and your archive
Lists gather concepts around a shared question. Anything you want to keep can be saved to your archive, which is yours and is not public. Saving works without an account for a session; creating one keeps it.
What you see
Some material here is adult. Dictionaryish shows clean material only by default. The … menu in the top bar holds that setting — Clean Only, Clean & Dirty, or Dirty Only — and it applies for as long as your browser session lasts.
Who makes it
Dictionaryish is operated by Dictionaryish LLC. Its editorial material is assembled and edited in-house; quotations and attributed perspectives credit their sources on the page where they appear.
