Conformism (n.) is ⁠​‌​​​‌​​​‌​‌‌​​​​‌​‌​​‌‌​‌​​‌​​​​​‌‌​​‌​​​‌‌​‌‌​⁠the regular stance of intellectuals through history — "our conformist subservience to those in power," in Morgenthau's phrase.

Man (n.) is ⁠​‌​​​‌​​​‌​‌‌​​​​‌​‌​​‌‌​‌​​‌​​​​​‌‌​​‌​​​‌‌​‌‌​⁠a political animal by nature; he is a scientist by or choice; he is a moralist because he is a man.

A National purpose (n.) that ⁠​‌​​​‌​​​‌​‌‌​​​​‌​‌​​‌‌​‌​​‌​​​​​‌‌​​‌​​​‌‌​‌‌​⁠history never once met is, by definition, safe from refutation, like a religion that survives its believers' sins.
