is the capacity for absorbing facts without interpreting them falsely and without losing caution, patience, and subtlety in the effort to understand them.

Art Of Reading With Profit - The Capacity For Absorbing Facts Without Interpreting Them Falsely And Without Losing Caution, Patience, And Subtlety In The Effort To Understand Them.

brings to a text a thousandfold more integrity in self-criticism than all the holy epileptics and visionaries — compared with us, they are moral cretins.

“None of these holy epileptics and seers of visions possessed a thousandth part of that integrity in self-criticism with which a philologist today reads a text or proves the truth of an historical event—Compared with us, they are moral cretins.”

is lacking in anyone who cannot read a text as text without mixing in interpretation — a reading that is the last-attained form of inner experience, perhaps barely possible.

“This I call the lack of philology: being able to read off a text as text, without mixing in an interpretation, is the last-attained form of 'inner experience' - perhaps one that's barely possible ...”

has been the educator as such, because his activity is the model of sublime monotony — under his banner the young man learns to grind, preparing to be civil servant, husband, office slave, newspaper reader and soldier.

“This is why the philologist has hitherto been the educator as such: because his activity provides the model of sublime monotony in action; under his banner the young man learns to "grind": first prerequisite for future efficiency in the fulfillment of mechanical duties (as civil servant, husband, office slave, newspaper reader, and soldier).”

in the inner life would be reading off a text as a text without interposing an interpretation — the last-developed form of inner experience, perhaps hardly possible; the simple man never just feels unwell, something always makes him unwell.

“… always says: this or that makes me feel unwell—he makes up his mind about his feeling unwell only when he has seen a reason for feeling unwell.—I call that a lack of philology; to be able to read off a text as a text without interposing an interpretation is the last-developed form of "inner experience"—perhaps one that is hardly possible—”

is tasked with the dirty work of laying the foundations for the preservation of a few noble books of great value for sake of the very few human beings who will know how to use them, a select group of souls who always will come but are never there.

A remark for philologists.- 'That some books are so valuable and so royal that whole generations of scholars are well em- ployed if their labors to preserve these books in a state that is pure and intelligible-philology exists in order to fortify this faith again and again. It presupposes that there is no lack of those rare human beings (even if one does not see them) who really know how to use such valuable books-presumably those who write, or could for the sake of a very few human beings, who always will come but are never there, a very large amount of fastidious and even dirty work needs to be done first: all of it is work in sum Delphinium.
