Noble (n.) and base (adj.) are not values at all; they are the difference from which values get their value.
Noble (n.) is slow of gesture and glance: there are not many valuable things, and they come of themselves to the valuable man — we do not easily admire.
Noble (n.) is proved not by deeds or works but by faith — some basic certainty a noble soul holds about itself, which cannot be sought, found, or perhaps lost; the noble soul reveres itself.
Noble (n.) is to play a part constantly, seek heavy responsibilities, leave happiness to the majority, make enemies everywhere — even, at worst, of oneself — and contradict the many by deeds, not words.
Noble (n.) human being experiences himself as determining values: "what is harmful to me is harmful in itself" — he honors things first; his morality is self-glorification.
The Noble (n.) must reveal itself not in preserving the rule of the species, but in becoming the advocate of the rule itself with the use of a rare and singular standard and almost a madness: the feeling of heat in things that feel cold to everybody else... the discovery of values for which no scales have been invented yet... offering sacrifices on altars that are dedicated to an unknown God... a courage without any desire for honors... a self-sufficiency that overflows and gives to men and things
