The Thing-in-itself (n.) is reached only by inconsistent inferences from inside to outside — the supposedly unknowable reality behind appearances; real theory of knowledge has no use for it.
The Thing-in-itself (n.) as unknown cause of appearances, if it exists at all, must be perceivable by some Ego who sees better and farther — and then perceived through appearances again, in an endless regress.
