It is differentiated from 'value' which is a affective structure of the present moment and 'ends' which are structures of an emerging, goal-directed future. Meaning, as mediated through memory, is key to the structuring of experience in that it provides the reflexive articulation of what would otherwise be the affectively infused experience of mere temporal succession through value.
