The roller coaster was first built in 1827 to carry coal from a mine to boats below.

Trees weren't biodegradable until bacteria and fungi evolved to eat dead wood. Coal comes mostly from unimaginably large forest fires that turned all the dead wood that had piled up into charcoal.

Ironically enough, the first ever fully electric cargo ship (built by China) with 'no threat to the environment' is being used to haul coal to a power station.
