is a matter, on the one hand, of endurance (I.C. Recognizing how pain enduringly writes a person's relationships and how to remain open to an adjacent self) and on the other the capacity to establish a particular relationship to death (i.e. Rejecting the trauma of, say, dying in a crowd in favor of the acceptance of the possibility of a normal death).

In fact, I defined healingin a very strange way in these texts. The notion of healing carried two ideas:the idea of endurance, and the idea of the capacity to establish a particularrelationship to death. Now, that is a very strange way of defining healing, but itreally came from my very long experience of working with people who I did notstart by thinking or choosing because they were the subjects of violence. But Iwas very struck by the ways in which pain does write itself enduringly onpeople's lives. It was not about a thunderous voice of pain, but about the manners in which pain was woven into the patterns of life. So for me, beingattentive to acknowledgment in relationship to pain is not a question oflocating broken lives and healed ones. It is about learning to recognize boththe pain, and the way that pain enduringly writes a person's relationships, andyet, remaining open to the possibility of an adjacent self, if you will, of a selfcoming into being. And the second idea through which I understand healing isthe ability to imagine a relationship to death. In very ordinary situations. Likesomeone being terrified of the idea of dying in the hands of a crowd, and thenlearning to think that dying of illness would be a privilege, which is slowlylearning to accept the possibility of normal death. These ideas are far morecomplicated than the application of a trauma grid. And they come from themost ordinary of people whose ways of living life have impressed on me andmy work. You know, I think that ordinary people in the simple process of livingtheir lives come to form very deep reflections on how they live their lives. Theymay not have the philosophical language, but in a certain sense it seems tome that there ought to be no distance between a true philosophy anddiscerning the way in which people live their lives, how they try to learn howthey might inhabit worlds that are given to us with all the signs of destructionthey have endured.
