Ayer notes (1952:33), while metaphysics claims to affford us 'knowledge of a reality transcending the world of science and common sense,' metaphyscial statements are not refutable. Therefore, wheile metaphysical statements purport to express factual propositions about the word, due to confusions of language and of logic they express neither empirical hypotheses nor totologyies (Ayer 1952:31, 41 in 'oMeara AA 1990 751).
