is an action that was not in the end a deterrent to the soviet union, but was instead responsible for having created the cold war, provoking the soviets to match American weapons development.

If the United States thought that it could stave off Soviet encroachment by using the atom bomb, it was gravely mistaken. It could plausibly be argued that Hiroshima and Nagasaki actually created the Cold War, and that if the United States had never used the atomic bomb at all, the Cold War would have progressed more slowly or perhaps not at all. As it happened the soviets felt a strong need to match American weapons development by launching their own atomic bomb project.
