Racism is firmly entrenched in the liberal perspective. Liberals have faith in a universal subjectivity (we are all just people). And yet, while they have a deep emotional investment in the myth of sameness, their actions reflect the primacy of whiteness as a sign informing who they are and how they think.

White supremacy is a useful term for understanding the complicity of people of color in upholding and maintaining racial hierarchies that do not involve force (I.E slavery, apartheid). It enables us to recognize not only that black people are socialized to embody the values and attitudes of white supremacy, but we can exercise 'white supremacist control' over other black people.
