Perhaps one of the most compelling recent experiments in the literature on selfhood is Catherine Lutz's important work. Informed by practice theory, Lutz argues for the 'emergent, contested' natures of | identities and of emotions, characterizing emotions as culturally and historically constructed ideological practices. She persuasively argues, ' 'Once de-essentialized, emotion can be viewed as a cultural and interpersonal process of naming, justifying and persuading by people in 'relationship to each other. Emotional meaning is then a social rather than an individual achievement an emergent product of social life (Lutz 1988,4). She goes on to critique reifications of our own conceptual categories, particularly the subject/object, emotion/reason binaries, and I sensitively treats the problems of translating emotion categories across cultures. . . ' (Kondo 1990:40).
