In other words, coding takes something that might seem abstract, and makes it more uniform... although still not objective, it allows professionals across a given field to use common language and standards of vision (or, at least allows them to think that they are doing this). Likewise, Goodwin defines highlighting as a process that 'makes specific phenomena in a complex perceptual field salient by marking them in some fashion' (606). Like a student highlighting in a textbook, this process draws attention to what has been highlighted, for others to see.
