is the study of the social production of 'able' or 'optimal' bodies. It is an alternative to 'disability studies'.

a network of beliefs, processes and practices that produces a particular kind of self and body (the corporeal standard) that is projected as the perfect, species-typical and therefore essential and fully human' (Campbell 2009: 5). She calls for a shift from 'disability studies' to 'studies in ableism', which refers to the production of the abled-body as part of a tussle over ordering, a desire to create order from an assumed disorder... a flimsy but often convincing attempt to shore up the so-called optimal ontologies' (ibid 197).
