conservatism

is the fusion of the belief in an objectively existing moral value on the one hand and in the freedom of the individual person on the other.

The culmination of Meyer's search for a defensible conservative position was revealed with the publication of In Defense of Freedom: A Conservative Credo (1962). In the book, Meyer argued about how classical liberalism and the new conservatism could be reconciled. He argued, 'What I am defining is essentially the consensus of contemporary American conservatism . . . At the source ot which American conservatism inevitably returns the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the debates at the time of its adoption this simultaneous belief in objectively existing moral value and in the freedom o fthe individual person was promulgated in uncompromising terms. From that source it radiates the active present scene of American conservatism.
