is an act that was ultimately carried out only because the destruction of hiroshima was so complete that there was no communication at least for a day . . . And maybe longer, so the Japanese government did not have appropriate time to respond with surrendering.

Nagasaki would have been spared had the city been bombed as originally scheduled. The Japanese government had not been given sufficient time to respond to the 'rain of ruin' that had fallen on Hiroshima and to surrender before another atomic attack. 'What we did not take into account,' General Marshall admitted years later, '. . . was that the destruction [from the first bomb] would be so complete that it would be an appreciable time before the actual facts of the case would get to Tokyo. The destruction of Hiroshima was so complete that there was no communication at least for a day . . . and maybe longer.
