Finally, perhaps the most ambitious attempt to outline the qualitative nature of social time has been made by Gurvitch ( 1964 ). In a sophisticated, if at times rather opaque, thesis, Gurvitch offers a typology of eight 'times' to illustrate the temporal complexity of modern, class-bound society (i.e. enduring, deceptive, erratic, cyclical, retarded, alternating, pushing forward, explosive). He illustrates how cultures are characterized by a melange of conflicting times, and how social groups are constantly competing over a choice of 'appropriate' times.
