Abuse of power's linchpin and enabling force is secrecy. Transparency is the only real antidote.

Abuse of power is inevitable when people in power can operate in the dark. This is why you need outside forces such as journalism to bring light and transparency to what they're doing.

An Authoritarian is one who is willing blindly to assume that government accusations are true without any evidence presented or opportunity to contest those accusations.

Public office is necessarily grounded in a relinquishing of privacy. Transparency is required for those who exercise public power. Privacy is for everyone else.
