With 'bodily dialogue' Ichikawa mitigates the position that we passively receive a given stimulus from the external world. To substantiate the concept of 'bodily dialogue,' Ichikawa uses the example of an individual looking at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Although this is a somewhat atypical example for visual perception, it is nonetheless effective in disclosing an aspect of visual perception that otherwise might been overlooked. He says: When we look at the Tower, our body [has a proclivity] to lean toward it in an attempt to assume potentially a posture similar to the [leaning] form of the Tower. We sketch it and respond to it. We feel within our body a tension between the power that inclines with the Tower and the power which restores it. (P. 17) (Ichikawa in Nagatomo 1986: 378)

is a kind of solicitation and dialogue. When we grasp a stone we 'sketch' its possible shapes and respond both to its actual and its possible shapes. We pose questions to the rock we hold.

This is likewise true, Ichikawa argues, in tactile perception. He says: When we grasp a stone, we sketch its possible shapes and respond both to its actual and possible shapes while fondling its factual shape. To explain it in reverse, we elicit the stone's response by grasping and posing question to it. (P. 17) (Ichikawa in Nagatomo 1986: 378)
