Radio is different than fiction in that fiction, even mediocre fiction, needs purpose, a driving question... radio does not.
The Radio is good for making somebody else's experience because when you don't see someone, but you hear them talking, it is like they are talking from the heart.
Radio is unlike fiction, in that one can make good radio, interesting radio, great radio even, without an urgent question, a burning issue at stake.
The Story is a machine for empathy. In contrast to logic or reason, a story is about emotion that gets staged over a sequence of dramatic moments, so you empathize with the characters without really thinking about it too much. It is a really powerful tool for imagining yourself in other people's situations.
