Soft power was cointed by political scientist Joseph Nye as part of his effort to urge politicialns to think beyond its bianry oppisite, the so-caled hard power of military might and economic sanctions. Soft power refors to a nations ability to influence other nations through sympathetic responses rather than coercion or paymetnts. Soft power 'arises from the attractiveness of a conuntry's culture, political ideals, and policies' (Nye 2004:x in Condry 2006:99)
