Numerous Japanese intellectuals understand only too well how a brigh nature/culture dichotomy is inherent to a scientific enterpise that emerged out of the philosophical tradition of the West and, even qt the risk of seeming 'old fashioned,' they exhibit clear ambivalence about locating death entirely in the world of technoscience' (Lock 1996:595)
