Proximity would be impossible in the absence of distance, because then the experiencer and the experienced would conflate, would become one, thereby making experience of the other impossible. Thus, what anthropology is in search of is not an experience of truly radical proximity, but a type of experience that puts us in contact with others and yet separates us from them, keeping us at a distance. And there is, of course, such an experience, an experience that is grounded in 'the having at a distance' of vision.'
