A modern city in the United States has the power to squelch, to destroy, to stamp out. Many of its defects are rooted in 'massive forces working obscurely in the background.' To be precise, there are three forces. First, cities have been increasingly regarded by Americans not as places to live in but as places to make money. Go to the Board of Trade, grab whatever you can, then go home to the little woman and the kids in Kenilworth.
