Jeffers develops a variety of images of nature in his poety, some of which remain gender free, others of which employ both female and male sex-typing. In the early poem, 'Continent's End,' he defines the ocean as female and the planet as something preceding both ocean and humanity. In evolutionary terms and in the amniotic metaphor, when Jeffers writes that 'we crawled out of the womb,' one sees the viability of the 'mother' imaging of the ocean. But more importantly, Jeffers concludes, 'Before there was any water there were tides of fire, both our tones flow from the older fountan' (1:17). Jeffers avoids limiting this earlier entity's existence by means of a false poetic sex-typing, which helps emphasize the godhead he wishes to imply through an animism that attempts to avoid anthropomorphic deification.
