Manhood and drinking are closely enough linked in ideology and observable behavior that men at least, most men in the Mexican laboring classes come to associate imbibling and inebriation with male idenity. Male ritual roles and norms regulating friendship are too deeply ingrained for them to reject or ignore this feature of life. Similarly, the roles and norms guiding female comportment offer such a striking contrast that it would be easy for a man in such circumstances to question his manhood should he decide to abstain (Brandes 2002: 111-112).
