Marriage is basic to recognition as equals in our society... any status short of that is inferior, unjust, and unconstitutional.

Same-sex marriage is indeed a matter for the supreme court rather than the states, as evidenced by the fact that the court has held repeatedly the marriage is one of the most fundamental rights that we have as Americans under our constitution.
