Bion thought that dreaming allowed conscious experience to move into the unconscious level where it could undergo psychological work (Ogden, 2004a). We think that dreaming delivers communications about conflict and experience to various levels of the self for conscious and unconscious individual and joint elaboration by significant others such as intimate partners or therapist. We see a dream as an interpersonal event of conscious and unconscious proportions, a comment on work already done and a way to move forward to new areas of exploration in couple therapy.
