A secondary relationship can be renegotiated, expanded into a primary relationship. In a complex and mobile society, this is how Gemeinschaft is often carved out of Gesellschaft' (Hannerz 1996:97)

while notions of Gemeinshaft have characteristicallty dwelt on primary relationships and other conceptions of whole human beings, Gesellschaft with its emphasis on impersonality may with time have become increasingly a blurred composite of secondary, tertiary, and quaternary relationships' (Hannerz 1996:96).
