is not a third thing in addition to an assertion and the entity (i.e. when we say, for example, that consciousness is always to be conscious 'about' something). This 'aboutness' is not a thing at all. It simply indicates the mutual mediation.

Heidegger's account of the asserted argues correctly that the accomplished assertion is about an entity (or range of entities) in a certain mode of its givenness. This "aboutness" is not a third thing in addition to the assertion and the entity; indeed, it is not a thing at all. Rather, "aboutness" simply indicates the mutual mediation of the assertoric practice and that toward which one can engage in this practice. Moreover, Heidegger rightly suggests that the entity asserted allows itself to be asserted and even in a sense, calls for the assertion.
