Adjacency is a mode of anthropological inquiry characterized by formulating something neither by directly identifying with it nor by making it exotic, but rather, by striving to be be out of synch, and doing so in such a way that one opens up a space of problems, of questions.
Adjacency is the treating not of visible similitudes between things but of the bonds and joints between things, which account for more subtle resemblances of relations such as stars to the sky in which they shine, plants and the earth, between diamonds and the minerals in which they are buried, sense organs and the face they animate, skin moles and the body of which they are the secret marks.
Adjacency is the very heart of painting: for any ground subtracts its own hue from the colors which it carries and therefore influences.
