deconstruction

is concerned with structures (which are neither simply ideas, nor forms, nor syntheses, nor systems).

A few more words on the subject of 'the context'. At that time structuralism was dominant. 'Deconstruction' seemed to be going in the same direction since the word signified a certain attention to structures (which themselves were neither simply ideas, nor forms, nor syntheses, nor systems).

is not a method or set of rules and procedures because it is not even an act or an operation.

It is not enough to say that deconstruction could not be reduced to some methodological instrumentality or to a set of rules and transposable procedures. Nor will it do to claim that each deconstructive 'event' remains singular or, in any case, as close as possible to something like an idiom or a signature. It must also be made clear that deconstruction is not even an act or an operation. (derrida 'letter to a japanese' : 285)

is the analysis of the invasion of the excluded, differentiating other into the selfsame.

deconstruction: analysis of the invasion of the excluded, differentiating other into the selfsame (see trace).

is precisely the opposite of destruction. It does not break a term 'apart' but rather breaks it 'open'.

is not a method -it cannot be reappropriated or domesticated and transformed into one.

I would say the same about method. Deconstruction is not a method and cannot be transformedinto one. Especially if the technical and procedural significations of the words are stressed. It is true that in certain circles (university or cultural, especially in the United States) the technical and methodological 'metaphor' that seems necessarily attached to the very word 'deconstruction' has been able to seduce or lead astray. Hence the debate that has developed in these circles: Can deconstruction become a methodology for reading and for interpretation' Can it thus let itself be reappropriated and domesticated by academic institutions' (derrida 'letter to a japanese' : 284)

is concerned with recognizing underlying, implicit assumptions : Gaps, contradictions, elisions, revealing metaphors.

involves discovering, recognizing, and understanding the underlying and unspoken and implicit assumptions, ideas, and frameworks that form the basis for thought and belief (wikipedia). looking for contradictions, gaps, ellisions, revealing metaphors. . .

is a reading that produces rather than protects. The task is to dismantle, not in order to reject or discard, but to reinscribe them in another way.

A reading that produces rather than protects. That description of deconstruction we have already entertained. Here is another: '. . . the task is .. . to dismantle [de construire] the metaphysical and rhetorical structures which are at work in [the text], not in order to reject or discard them, but to reinscribe them in another way.' (Derrida, on grammatologyMP 256, WM 13) (75)

is not a repudiation, but simply a demonstration of how texts cannot sustain the oppositions they take for granted.

Deconstruction, however, is not critique. Derrida treats Levi-Strauss with respect, and his project is not to persuade us to repudiate Saussure, still less to ridicule him (though there are moments of comedy in his account of the sermon against the sin of writing delivered by the moralist from Geneva). Instead, he points out that Saussure’s own book does not sustain the opposition between speech and writing it takes for granted and reiterates. On the contrary, the Course records (as an outrage) the invasion of the rejected writing into speech itself. Spelling, Saussure declares with horror, is changing pronunciation.
