is reading in such a way that, in order to read, we need to get out of the text. We have to shuttle back and forth incessantly. We have to try all possible relations with a text. At some point, we have to disengage ourselves from the text as a living ensemble.

Reading is also a complex and delicate balancing act, requiring much care, skill and thought on the part of the reader. As Cixous comments at the commencement of the transcripts from her seminar al the Centre de Recherches en Etudes Feminines collected in Reading with Clarice Lispector, there are a wide variety of ways in which the strangeness or otherness of a text can be listened to and explored. Cixous's description of these different possible approaches to a text can be tentatively put forward as the outline of a 'feminine' practice of reading:
