The parable of the Fall may rightly be viewed as the paradigm of a person ingesting what he ought not to ingest. A devout Jew eating ham or a devout Muslim drinking whiskey are examples of sins, that is, breaking religious rules (offenses against God). Murder and theft are examples of crimes, that is, breaking secular rules (offenses against the community, the State). As human beings, we can make- and unmake- such distinctions. Thus, we can transform sins into crimes, crimes into sins, and both into diseases. Which of these conceptual categorizations-that is, sin, crime, disease, or not any of these (that is, acceptable behavior) -we accept or reject depends almost wholly on how we wish to deal with the person who exhibits the (problematic) behavior.
