harmonic regime

is, in kinship studies, a society where both the family name and the question of where they live, aligns (with either the father or mother). A disharmonic regime is a society where name and place of residence differ.

A society is defined as ordered as a harmonic regime if its 'rule of descent' (i.e., of transmission of 'the family name') and its 'rule of residence' are congruent, i.e., patrilineal and patrilocal, or matrilineal and matrilocal, so that the result is a system of unilineal local groups. A disharmonic regime is defined as one in which the rule of descent and the rule of residence are complementary rather than congruent, i.e., patrilineal and matrilocal, or matrilineal and patrilocal.(in scheffler's review of elementary forms)
