Indebtedness is built into the consciousness of man, an awareness of owing gratitude, of being called on to reciprocate, to answer, to live in a way which is compatible with the grandeur and mystery of living.

Indebtedness does not make men grateful, but vengeful. A little charity not forgotten turns into a gnawing worm.
