For Benjamin, Marxism is a matter of images. Benjamin writes that Marx correctly secularized the representation of the messianic age in the image of the classless society. The classless society is an image, an analogy for the messianic age. Such an image, argues Benjamin, benefits the revoltuionary politics of the proletariat, in a sense reminiscent of Sorel's positive evaluation of the image of the general strike, worked over by Benjamin in 'Zur Kritik der Gewalt' (1921). 'History breaks down into images not stories,' he notes.

For him as for Eagleton, Marxism is more than a bunch of theories... it is a guarantee of being on the right side of history. Seeing the communist project for what it really was would be tantamount to admitting that their lives have been without meaning.'

Marxist theory itself is not just a commentary on the world, but an instrument for changing it' (142).

for Jameson, Marxism is not just another theory for open exchange on the methodological market. A number of grounds are presented for the argument that Marxism is more than a theory, the main one being its ability to provide a total picture within which other methods and interpretations may find their place... that is, a Marxist method does not displace other theories but subsumes them within its own program.

is a non-economistic program for revolutionary society.

And in fact, the interest in Gramsci that we found, was that Gramsci was allowing us to elaborate a non-economistic Marxism. ' (interview with Lecau and Mouffe NET)

is a method of analysis and an instrument of critique and social transformation.

For Marcuse, Marxism is a method of analysis and instrument of critique and social transformation and is not a dogma or system of absolute knowledge. Reading . . .
