anthropology of the body

is an anthropological approach which, since the 1970s, has been concerned with the cultural uses of the body, the body in relation to specific domains (health / politics), and lastly, the 'multiple body' concerned with the social, individual, and body-politic.

Csordas describes the 'anthropology of the body' to be a movement since the 1970s characterised by three approaches: 1. 'the analytic body', or 'the cultural uses and conditioning of the five external senses (i.e.. Maus' techniques of the body swimming, dancing, washing) or parts of the body or bodily processes and bodily fluids. 2. 'topical body': 'the body in relation to specific domains of cultural activity (i.e. the body and health, the body and political domination, the body and health). and 3. 'the multiple body':(i.e concern with the social body, individual body, the body poliitc, the consumer body, the medical body) (Csordas 1994 (5-6)). He compares this with his concern with 'embodiment'
