communicative action

is a form of communication (or speech) in which the validity of what is said is naively presupposed in order to exchange information.

Up to now we have distinguished between two forms of communication (or 'speech'): communicative action (interaction) and discourse. In communicative action, the validity of utterances is naively presupposed in order to exchange information (experiences related to action). In discourse, validity claims that have been problematized become explicit topics of discussion, but no information is exchanged. In discourse we attempt to reestablish or replace an agreement that had existed in communicative action and became problematized. This is the sense on which I spoke of reaching a mutual understanding discursively. The goal of argumentation is to work through a situation that arises through the persistent problematization of validity claims that are naively presupposed in communicative action.
