Butler (1999:179) insisted that gender identity is merely 'the stylized repetition of acts through time' and 'not a seemingly seamless identity.' Yet seamless is exactly what the successful performance of gender in everyday life makes it appear to be. 'In what sense,' Butler (1999:178) then asks, 'is gender an act'' In the same sense, she answers, 'as in other ritual social dramas.. .the action of gender requires a performance that is repeated. This repetition is at once a reenactment and reexperiencing of a set of meanings already socially established... and it is the mundane and ritualized form of their legitimation.' (in alexander 2004)
