Saussure is generally recognised as the founder of structural linguistics. Two of his continuators in the field of phonology (the science of speech sounds), Trubetzkoy and Jakobson, are Le viStrauss' main references in linguistics, apart from Saussure himself. In 1945 he published 'Structural Analysis in Linguistics and in Anthropology', where, quoting Trubetzkoy, he summarised the four main principles of methodology in phonology: the reduction of conscious linguistic phenomena to their unconscious infrastructure... the analysis of relations between terms rather than the treatment of terms as independent entities... the use of the concept of system and the elucidation of the structure underlying the system... the discovery of general laws, either by induction or logical deduction.
