Social capital is important because, as with conventional capital, the more one has, the more one gets. Social capital also tends to be cumulative and self-reinforcing. As you use it to build connections and generate trust, it becomes easier to accumulate more trust, create denser networks, and produce more effective social norms. Unlike normal capital, however, social capital tends to deplete and waste away if not regularly paid out.13
