Foucault stresses that discourse is associated with relations of power. In fact, discourses are vehicles of power. The power of the human sciences derives from its policing of 'abnormal behavior' in what is claimed to be knowledge. Foucault calls such claims to knowledge 'discourse'. In other words, a discourse is a loose structure of interconnected assumptions, cultural artifacts, social practices and the like that makes knowledge possible.
