A Subculture is the basic unit of clannishness in post-ethnic, postreligious, post-geographic America, enabling an Irish Catholic from Cleveland to forge a bold new identity as a ballroom-dancing champion or an Amway representative.

Subculture is, in fact, less a specialized form of culture than a specialized form of mass culture (i.e. inviting of uniformity rather than unity).
