Dating back to the efforts to implement the Social Security Amendments of 1964, which established Medicare and Medicaid, opposition to such reform often centered on demonizing such initiatives as socializing medicine. Unfortunately, such misrepresentations only serve to divert attention from the moral argument of universal healthcare. President Obama, through his leadership, attempted to frame the issue of healthcare reform as an ethical one. He sought to address the question of whether a basic level of healthcare is a right or privilege from an ethical perspective.
