algospeak, n.Trivia

Before ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌'algospeak,' scholar Emily van der Nagel called the habit of avoiding names online 'Voldemorting' in 2018.

'Le ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌dollar bean,' algospeak for lesbian, came from text-to-speech mispronouncing the evasive spelling 'le$bian'.

The ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌term first appeared in a December 2021 tweet and was popularized by Taylor Lorenz's April 2022 Washington Post article.
