is an important field to study because it is ‘optically closest’ to us and thus can do justice to the being of Dasein’s character as existence.

But the problem that faces us now is: how can we study the Being of Dasein in a way that does justice to its character as existence? Heidegger proposes that we must turn to what is "ontically closest" to us (69/43), and that is everydayness. We must, so to speak, catch ourselves in the act of everyday existence. This is a challenging assignment, since as soon as we look at ourselves, we tend to misinterpret ourselves.

is a crucial domain to study because in everyday existence we are not detached viewers or spectators, but engaged actors; we do things in the world, our being being an issue for us.

One typical misinterpretation is to observe ourselves as if we were normally observers, to view ourselves as if we were essentially detached viewers.Heidegger's first job will be to disabuse us of this notion. In everyday existence, we are not spectators, but engaged actors. Once he has established this, he can proceed to show in the rest of Division I that as we do things in the world, our Being is an issue for us. We relate to our own Being, either authentically or inauthentically. This does not occur primarily through knowledge or self-consciousness, but through acting, through capably dealing with the beings around us.

All existing as it is comes from and goes back to Dasein’s everyday, indifferent way of being, dubbed its “averageness.” Not a mere aspect of Dasein, everydayness embodies “the structure of existentiality a priori” (SZ 43f, 50). Dasein’s concern, circumspection, the inconspicuous context of its implements, and its spacings are all part of its average everydayness (SZ 73, 81, 105ff).

is that which takes Dasein as something handy that is procured, administered and reckoned away.

In Dasein’s everydayness it is predominantly “captivated” (benommen) by its world, and the They is “who” it is (SZ 113f, 127f). Idle talk, curiosity, and ambiguity characterize how Dasein is its Da everyday, namely, as fallen. “Fallenness is a basic type of being of everydayness,” i.e. a lost, inauthentic everydayness, so much so that authentic existence is a modification of fallen everydayness (SZ 175, 178–81, 313, 376). “Everydayness takes Dasein as something handy that is procured [besorgt], i.e. administered and reckoned away” (SZ 289).
