is a mode of investigation whereby what is decisive is not to get out of the circle but to come into it in the right way.

How, then, one might ask, can there be a responsible investigation' Heidegger answers: 'What is decisive is not to get out of the circle but to come into it in the right way' (195) [153]. Only much later, when he discusses the meaning of primordial, does it become a bit clearer what this might mean. One of Schleiermacher's enduring contributions to hermeneutics is his concept of the hermeneutical circle. He states, paradoxically, that meaning of the part is only understood within the context of the whole... but the whole is never given unless through an understanding of the parts.

is a thing which, in the analysis of dasein, we must dive right into in order to make sure that even at the start we have a full view of dasein's circular being.

We must . . . endeavour to leap into the 'circle,'primordially and wholly, so that even at the start of the analysis of Dasein we make sure that we have a full view of Dasein's circular being. If, in the ontology of Dasein,we 'take our departure' from a worldless 'I' in order to provide this 'I' with an object and an ontologically baseless relation to that object, then we have 'presupposed' not too much, but too little.
