hermeneutics

is simply the attitude taken by someone who wants to understand something.

A Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900 2002) has framed it, hermeneutics is the attitude of someone who wants to understand something

is a method seeking to understand an author better than he has himself.

Schleiermacher's famous hermeneutic principle: 'to understand an author better than he has understood himself' (Schleiermacher).

is not a limitation on understanding, but a precondition of it.

For Heidegger, this hermeneutic structure is not a limitation on understanding, but a precondition of it, and philosophical understanding (conceived as fundamental ontology) is no exception.

is not merely a question of one person trying to understand another, rather, it is based on common human sympathy and common human experience.

For Dilthey, hermeneutics is based on common human sympathy and common human experience. It is not merely a question of one person trying to understand another the entire hermeneutic experience is more complex than that. People help each other understand life better.

is primarily practice, the art of understanding and making things understandable for others.

Hermeneutics is primarily practice, the art of understanding and making things understandable for others.

is not, primarily, interpreting, but rather the bringing of tidings and a message, an act involving the 'presence of the presencing'.

In view of its association with Hermes, the messenger of the gods, hermeneutics first means 'not interpreting, but before that the bringing of tidings and a message' (122/29). It no longer concerns Dasein and its existence, but being, or rather 'presence of the presencing [Anwesen des Anwesenden], ie. the twofold of the two in their oneness. [. . . ] Man thus essences as man by responding to the call of the twofold and revealing its message. [. ..] (inwood 89)]

is not an attempt to understand the psychology of another person, but an attempt to inhabit and understand the mode of being projected by the text.

For what must be interpreted in a text is a proposed world which I could inhabit and wherein I could project one of my ownmost possibilities. For Ricoeur, following Gadamer, we can no longer define hermeneutics or the theory of interpretation ‘in terms of the search for the psychological intentions of another person which are concealed behind the text, and if we do not want to reduce interpretation to the dismantling of structures, then what remains to be interpreted?’ (Ricoeur 1981: 141). The answer is a Heideggerian one: the interpreter should aim to inhabit and understand the mode of being projected by the text, i.e. a world in the sense given in the first chapter of this study:For what must be interpreted in a text is a proposed world which I could inhabit and wherein I could project one of my ownmost possibilities. This is what I call the world of the text, the world proper to this unique text.

is the analysis of understanding and categories of life as they take root in quotidian, prescientific practices.

Dilthey construes hermeneutics as the analysis of “understanding” and “categories of life,” as they take root in quotidian, prescientific practices.
