Dasein is absorbed in the world, fascinated by it. Dasein is a self that remains the same over time, even though it is not a substantial piece of matter. Yet we are not alone: there are the other Daseins who exist with us. Heidegger rightly notes that I do not usually distinguish myself from the others—rather, the others are mostly those from whom I do not distinguish myself.

is structured temporally in a threefold manner: idle talk (past), curiosity (future), and ambiguity (present).

I am one of them, not different from them. The others are co-Dasein, and like me they are also encountered in a specific environment, not in isolation. Just as with equipment, I do not encounter other Daseins as pieces of physical flesh and blood, but meet them in the midst of their labors, wrapped up in the environment. Even if I meet other Daseins who are doing nothing at all, they are still not encountered as present-at-hand. Rather (in one of the few amusing remarks in his otherwise somber book) Heidegger says that idle Daseins are encountered in an “uncircumspective tarrying alongside everything and nothing.”
